Root canal treatment consists of the removal of injured or infected tissue, which is unable to repair itself, from the insides of the tooth, cleaning out the insides of the tooth, and filling the space. This is done under local anesthesia (numbing); the local anesthetics we have today are extremely effective in keeping the tooth numb. After this treatment the tooth will need some type of a crown to help hold everything together.
The alternative to root canal treatment is either not to do anything in which case one risks further infection/swelling/pain/etc, or to have the tooth extracted resulting in loss of the tooth.
